christmas gifts

July 25, 2007 By: amyswandering3 Comments

Sorry this post is late going up ~ re-stocking my bare pantry seemed a bit more important than playing on my blog this morning.

Today we are sharing gift ideas!

**One of my favorite gifts ever was from my SIL & BIL. They collected recipes from the whole family and then made us all a Family Cookbook. They printed the recipes on their computer and put them in a binder (the kind you can slide a pic into the front & back cover). They designed a pretty page for the front of the cookbook and wrote a sweet letter to everyone for the back.

**Sign up to get newsletters from online photo places like Snapfish. They will email you coupon codes & promos for their gift shop. You can create some really adorable gifts~calendar, desk organizer, pillow, cutting board. In fact, I will start posting any promo deals between now & Christmas, so that means you have to keep coming back to my blog! You can get a notebook with photo for only $9.99 – add a promo to that and you’ve got a good deal. Here are some other good photo gift sites~some of them have photo books you can create which are really neat!

love long ago

July 24, 2007 By: amyswandering9 Comments

Was it love at first site? or did it take a little longer…
Let’s travel back to the day we met our spouse.

Is there such a thing as like at first sight? LOL. I first met Hubby through our youth group – I was 17, he was 16. He was in a serious relationship at the time. I was not interested in him at all, but I do remember thinking, “I’d like to marry a guy like that someday.” He was cute, friendly and very respectful of the girls in the youth group.

Our group went on a mission trip the summer after my Senior year and we became fast friends on the trip- he was very funny and a little crazy :o) He & his long-time girlfriend broke up as soon as the trip was over. I was too busy drooling over another guy in our youth group to care, but that next Sunday there was a group of girls crowded around Jason’s dad wanting to know if it was true, is he really available? Our youth minister got a kick out of it and created tickets for “A Date with Jason”. We ran with it & came up with all these silly “date” ideas like washing his car LOL. We decided to test some of them out & that’s when I realized that I might like him more than just a friend. That just complicated things and made it painful to watch him date one of my close friends. Something happened, although I don’t remember what, and we ended up not speaking to each other for several months.

Fast forward to the summer after his Senior year. It’s the week before VBS and we are all at the church building putting in long hours of preparation. We started talking to each other & having fun again. Everyone but the two of us realized that we were perfect for each other, so our friends Jeff & Kama invited us to go out with them after the last night of VBS ( not as a couple, just to hang out) . It ended up being too late because Kama had a very strict curfew, so they went home and Jason & I went to his house. Someone had rented The Princess Bride so we decided to watch it. It was a romantic movie, we held hands, and that was the end of “just friends”. We were engaged 3 months later, and we’ll celebrate our 15th anniversary in October.

[I didn’t know this until several months later, but during that prep week Jason told his friend BJ that he was going to marry me.]

I know you have a great story to tell about how you met your spouse, so run on over to Annie’s and share it!

christmas crafts

July 24, 2007 By: amyswandering2 Comments

Welcome to our second day of

chjuly2s.gif

Please share any craft ideas or websites that you enjoy. Don’t forget to enter my Snowman drawing! You get an extra entry for leaving an idea in the comments, or for linking to Christmas in July from your blog.

**We have a Snowflake party (since there is no such thing as a white Christmas around here). We sit down with a stack of computer paper & my scrapbooking scissors, and an hour later we have some beautiful creations. I paste them in our dining room window with a gluestick – the glue comes right off with a little windex & elbow grease.

Dave’s Snowflakes for great pattern designs

Snow Crystals breathtaking photos of real snowflakes – great for a discussion on the beauty & majesty of God

**My mom & I had so much fun hosting an ornament exchange party. Send out invitations in October & make sure to get an RSVP within 2 weeks. Once you know how many people will be coming, let your guests know how many handcrafted ornaments they need to bring. (ex: 10 guests, everyone needs to make 10 ornaments) We always had a brunch on the the first Saturday in December – casseroles, muffins, coffee, tea & cocoa. Our guests would bring their ornaments in a basket & I provided festive bags for the ones they were taking home (usually $1 for 10 at my favorite Dollar Tree).

**I tear out ideas from magazines like Family Fun (& also print them off the internet), put them in clear page protectors, & make a Holiday Fun Idea notebook.

**Vista Print is a really cheap site to purchase note cards & labels. A couple of years ago I got an email about customizing note cards for your family members (little people caricatures). I just happened to notice that in the hat selections there were Christmas hats. I made custom Christmas cards of our family for the same price I would have paid for ordinary cards from Walmart. Create an account and they will email you special offers like free notecards, just pay shipping costs.

christmas traditions

July 23, 2007 By: amyswandering2 Comments

I love, love, love the Christmas season! Everything is so colorful, happy, joyful, peaceful. These are some of the things we do every year to celebrate:

**My Christmas fun starts the day after Thanksgiving with Black Friday Sales. I am a member at Gotta Deal and starting around October they have a board dedicated to Black Friday deals.

**I collect nativity sets and add a new one each year. I display them on our entertainment center, but all the wise men go on the mantel because they are traveling “from afar”. Here’s my tip for cheaply adding to a collection: I purchase my nativity set for the next year at the after-Christmas sales for 50 – 70% off.

**We decorate our tree the week after Thanksgiving and that night my kids get to open their new winter pajamas.

**I put all of our Christmas books in a basket on the fireplace. I read a cute idea somewhere – wrap 25 books; open & read one each day until Christmas.

**remembering tree – this is something new I came up with last year in honor of our son Elijah. His favorite color was purple & his favorite holiday song was “I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas”. We’ve been collecting purple hippos for several years and would put a few on our tree each year. I just happened to find a small purple fiber optics tree at Dollar General last year & I decorated it with all of our hippos. It was really cute, & of course I didn’t take a pic of it!! You will just have to hang around until December to see it :o)

Here are a couple of ideas I want to try this year:

A Christmas Prayer
Robert Louis Stevenson

O God, our loving Father, help us
Rightly to remember the birth of Jesus,
That we may share in the song of the
Angels, the gladness of the shepherds
And the worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate and open the
Door of love all over the world.

Deliver us from evil by the blessing
That Christ brings, and teach us
to be merry with clear hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us happy
To be thy children and the Christmas
Evening bring us to our beds with
Grateful thoughts, forgiving, and
Forgiven, for Jesus’ sake. Amen
