Make a Birdseed Wreath

birdseed wreath 3

This beautiful birdseed wreath is a simple & inexpensive homemade gift.

Great for the grandparents!!

Easy Birdseed Wreath

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 3 Tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 4 cups birdseed
  • non-stick cooking spray
  • bundt pan

Spray the bundt pan with the nonstick cooking spray.

Mix the warm water and gelatin in a bowl until dissolved. Whisk in the flour and corn syrup until well-combined. It will be thick.

Add in the seeds and stir until the all of the seeds are coated. It will be pretty sticky by this point.

Spoon the birdseed mixture into the pan, pressing down until it is packed and level. I used my hands on this step.

Allow to dry for about 24 hours*. The surface will harden and turn white when it is done. Gently remove your wreath from the pan, tie on a ribbon, and enjoy!

*After drying for 24 hours, you can place it in a 200 degree oven for 1-2 hours to ensure it is dry all the way through. Allow to cool before removing from the pan. Your wreath should feel rock-hard when it is ready.

I tried this and it looked great hanging outside but…… when I looked out to see it a few hours later it was in pieces on the ground. What went wrong?

Oh no!! So sorry it didn’t work for you. Hmmm….maybe it wasn’t dry enough? After letting it dry for 24 hours, you could put it in a low-temp oven for an hour or two to ensure that it is dry all the way through. It should feel rock-hard. (I will update my post with this info.)

I used two pieces of wired ribbon. One is just knotted in a loop through the wreath as a hanger. I used the second to tie a bow around the first piece of ribbon. Does that make sense?

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been looking for a “recipe” explaining how to heat dry the wreaths. I ran into a guy who makes these, but only gave me part of the information. He said that he found by heat drying them they were less likely to mold if they didn’t get used right away. Also, in my quest for heat drying, I ran across an idea I will be incorporating when I make mine. Take a wire clothes hanger or other heavy wire and make a circle about half the size of your mold. Add half your birdseed mix to your mold then lay in your wire. Now add the rest of your seed mixture and continue with the rest of the directions. The wire keeps the birdseed wreath intact if it should get eaten through.
