Homeschool Theme of the Day

July 25, 2013 By: amyswandering2 Comments

theme of the day

We had great success last year with our Theme of the Day Chart!

With 5 kiddos needing my attention, it was hard for us to fit in the fun stuff like crafts or artist studies. Adding them to our morning homeschool routine allows us to stay on track without the extras slipping through the cracks.

I am changing it up just a bit this year by using Wednesday to focus on Geography instead of Writing. Last year’s Theme of the Day Chart is still available if that suits you better.

{All of the links below are FREE, but that could change so double check!}

~ Our 2013-14 Theme of the Day Chart ~

Celebrating Christmas in July

July 23, 2013 By: amyswanderingcomment

celebrating christmas in july

My mom’s birthday is on July 25th, so last year we threw her a Christmas in July party. It was so much fun!! My gears started turning as I cooked up a plan for this year…

We could use July 25th to try out some of the fun projects & recipes that we never find time for during December!!

I don’t know about yours, but my family likes to stick very closely to traditions. And since no one likes a stressed-out mommy, I try to limit how many new activities I add each year.

KISS –  Keep it Sweet & Simple, that’s my motto.

Christmas in July is the perfect time to try out some new ideas.

We are going to start our day with this yummy Cinnamon Baked French Toast that has been calling to me from my Pinterest Christmas Board.

{Note to self: set Pandora to a Christmas station!}

I am going to give each kid a Christmas Wish List so they can get a head start.

My kiddos like to toss in their 2 cents, so I created a Christmas to Remember survey for them to fill out so we can plan our holiday season.

After an appetizer dinner of sausage balls and fried mozzerella sticks, we will watch a movie and have a snowflake cutting party. The snowflakes will be carefully bagged up and put away to make a gorgeous blizzard garland. I have had it bookmarked for YEARS, and we have a snowflake party every December, but never manage to find time to put it all together. I’m thinking this might be the year we finally get it up. 😉

There are so many things you could do for Christmas in July:

  • get started on some handmade gifts
  • put together a Christmas Planning Binder
  • make Christmas cards
  • plan you Christmas card picture
  • get an early start on some crafts
  • play silly games

You can also take some time to think about getting off the Crazy Christmas wagon. Christmas is a season of joy and peace. A time to celebrate a Savior.

Do you do any kind of Christmas in July activities?

Real Life Homeschooling: It’s Looking A Tad Froggy

July 9, 2013 By: amyswandering2 Comments

RLH

Our new house has a beautiful pool in the backyard!! There is no screen over it yet, so someone is constantly scooping debris out. A couple of weeks ago we walked out to find the top step covered with tiny black things. At first we thought they were buds from a nearby tree, or maybe tiny bugs. Two days later it was very clear what they were.

FROG EGGS!

frog eggs
Do you see all the little black dots? Those are thousands of frog eggs!

Hubby & I were grossed out, but the kids were beyond excited. Sad faces were displayed when we informed them that there was no way our pool was becoming a frog pond. They quickly scooped up a few to observe.

The excitement didn’t last for long, however …

It turns out our whole pool was infested with tadpoles, not just the top step!

Tadpoles in the pool
Insert horror movie music here.

The kids’ wonder quickly turned to disgust, with the girls convinced that they had surely swallowed frog eggs the last time they went for a swim. Hubby & I had been planning on going to the pool store on Saturday to learn Pool Care 101, but we bee-lined it over and stocked up on chemicals to shock the pool.

tadpoles

Our cute little tadpoles are growing and changing each day. We learned some interesting things about tadpoles:

  • It takes at least 6 weeks to go from egg to tadpole to frog.
  • They will eat lettuce that has been boiled or frozen. (They will also eat eggs that haven’t hatched. Ewww!)
  • Once their legs appear, they will need rocks or dirt to climb on or they will drown.
  • A frog returns to where it hatched. We were told that at one time our pool was filled with nasty sludge – the perfect frog breeding ground.

We are here! We are here! We are HERE!

Pelicans!

Those of you whole follow me on Facebook know that we just made a HUGE transition by moving from the Dallas area to the Tampa Bay area.

The past year has been a long, hard road for our family. We went into business with a friend 3 years ago and discovered (too late) that we did not have the same vision for the company. Our partner wanted out at all costs and we sadly closed the doors at the first of the year.

We have had to deal with exhaustion due to 70+ hour work weeks, a broken friendship, and untruths being spread about why the company closed. We are choosing to hold our heads high and keep our mouths closed, because anyone who really knows my husband will hopefully not believe what is being said about him.

Since the beginning, we have been praying for God to reveal His will and leave us with only one open door. He has shown Himself time and time again throughout our journey. It has been so encouraging to us, and to the many who have been praying alongside us, to see His plan unfold.

5 minutes from our house!

A job, a move, a house, a new church home … all of these things were placed in front of us through no pursuit of our own. I never dreamed that I would be pulling up my Texas roots and replanting them in Florida. Or that my kiddos would joyfully agree! Such is the grace and mercy of the Father.

I feel like we are in a whole new country, not just a few states over. We have bananas growing in our front yard!

1618

bananas! in my front yard!!

And a flock of whatever-these-are birds stops by for breakfast every morning.

what are these?

We are loving our new adventure, and I am excited to get to share it with you!
