The Old Lady’s Thanksgiving Dinner – A Thanksgiving Math Activity

November 11, 2013 By: amyswandering4 Comments

The Old Lady's Thanksgiving Dinner

I took one of our favorite Thanksgiving books, I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, and turned it into a fun math lesson. We decided to add up all the food at the Old Lady’s Thanksgiving dinner!

First, we read through the book and made a list of the dishes. I let the kids decide how they wanted to measure each food. Whole pies or slices? Turkey by the piece or the pound? We used the grocery ads and a couple of websites to figure out things like how many pounds are in an average-sized frozen turkey, and how many servings are in a cake.

After all of our measurement tools were determined, we multiplied the unit of measurement times the number of times the food was mentioned in the book.

These are the ways they chose to measure the food:

pie = 8 slices

cider = 1 gallon

roll = 2 1/2 inches

squash = 6 lbs  (they weighed the ornamental one from the porch)

salad = 2 bags

turkey = 15 lbs

pot = 10 quarts

cake = 291 servings  (several different-sized tiers)

bread = 22 slices (1 loaf)

I created a FREE printable that you can use for this lesson!
