I recently commented to a friend that my kids often learn more through videos and games than they do through traditional homeschool curriculum. They tend to retain what they enjoy.

Reading Eggs – My daughter loves the Reading Eggs program and I really feel like it has helped her reading progress tremendously.
Reading Eggs is an online reading program that seeks to make learning essential reading skills a fun and motivating experience for 4 – 8 year olds.
The program has many features that support your core literacy teaching and get your students successfully started on their journey to becoming proficient readers, including:
- Learn Skills: Children complete animated online lessons where they learn essential reading skills. The variety of fun activities within each lesson provides the repetition needed for these skills to become part of the child’s long term memory.
Read Books: Children can gain confidence by reading books online that only contain words they have already learned in the program.
Earn Rewards: Children earn golden eggs as rewards for work completed. They can use these eggs to buy reward games.
Take Quizzes: After 10 lessons, children complete a Mastery Quiz. This provides you with a report of what your child or student is learning. Children can repeat the online lessons as many times as they like. Young children enjoy repetition and it has great benefits in helping children learn and retain the materials.

Skybrary School – Do you remember the well-loved Reading Rainbow show? LeVar Burton is still helping kids love reading with his new online venture.

Your child will visit seven themed islands and discover books and educational video field trips based on their interests and reading level. In addition, they can access the materials anytime they have access to the Internet — whether on a table, phone, or desktop computer.
Skybrary School helps develop these skills:
- Fluency – Develop confident readers with reading practice anytime, anywhere.
- Comprehension – Broaden student’s knowledge and introduce them to new concepts and ideas
- Critical Thinking – Provide opportunities to analyze text, apply logic and form opinions.

- Memory – Strengthen focus, concentration and retention by immersing students in stories they care about.
Grammar Homeschool Curriculum
Grammaropolis is a new way to learn about the parts of speech based on an innovative story-based approach. Hailed as the Schoolhouse Rock for the 21st Century, Grammaropolis features the parts of speech and punctuation marks as animated characters with personalities based on the roles they play in the sentence. Those characters star in books, songs, videos, and quizzes.
Because the parts of speech are personified based on their roles in the sentence, students can visualize and internalize the roles of the parts of speech to identify how a sentence is put together.
Combining this character-based content with more traditional quiz-based assessment, Grammaropolis is designed to address students’ varied learning styles and also provides performance tracking for each child.

Shakespeare In Bits helps cut down on the confusion that comes with trying to follow along with the famous plays.
Shakespeare In Bits brings The Bard’s most popular plays to life through cleverly animated re-enactments, full audio and unabridged text in one comprehensive package, featuring:
- Completely Unabridged Play Text: Understand and appreciate the linguistic richness of Shakespeare’s plays with the original play text, broken into easily digested ‘bits’. In-line translation helps you to understand difficult words and phrases within the context of the original play text.
- High-resolution Animated Reenactments: Each title includes hours of high-resolution animation with professional audio soundtrack, helping you to decode and comprehend Shakespeare’s fertile prose quickly and efficiently. The text, presented side-by-side with animated action, is easy to follow with portions of text being highlighted as they are spoken in the play.
- Character Biographies: Biographies for each cast character can be accessed from the main play or through a dedicated cast feature. An illustrated character relationship map demonstrates key characters and their inter-relationships in the play.
- Exam Preparation: Each Shakespeare In Bits title provides a wide selection of integrated analyses and study notes for each scene to help you understand plot summaries, key themes, language, imagery and quotes from the play.
- Perpetual Use License: You will have a perpetual use license to use Shakespeare In Bits software. This is NOT an annual subscription.
Vocabulary Homeschool Curriculum
Words and Their Stories uses state-of-the-art Flash interaction to transform vocabulary study using the WATS™ (“Words and Their Stories”) system — a vocabulary acquisition process based on inductive reasoning. WATS requires students to apply etymology and critical thinking skills (application, analysis, synthesis) in a sequential, inductive process to develop true understanding of word meaning.
Words and Their Stories applies the WATS process to general vocabulary study, as well as standardized test preparation and literature-specific vocabulary that is then combined with activities designed to improve reading comprehension skills. All products are delivered through engaging multimedia and are designed specifically for grades 5 and up, allowing both individualized instruction and self-paced study.
Documenting Online Homeschool Activities
Some people hesitate to use online resources for homeschool curriculum because there are no worksheets to add to a year-end portfolio. Unless your state law simply doesn’t allow it, all you need to do is screenshot a few of the activities and game scores after your child is done. You can either print the pictures out or add them to a digital file.
One last feature that I want to point out from the Homeschool Buyer’s Co-op – the Homeschool Planet Online Planner. Take a look at how I used Homeschool Planet to organize our homeschool year.
