The Homeschool Writing Curriculum That Stopped Our Writing Battle

August 31, 2017 By: amyswanderingcomment

*Disclosure: I received free curriculum for review purposes and am being compensated for my time. I am not required to give a positive review.  As always,  I am sharing my honest opinion with you.

My 14 yr. old son hates writing. And I mean h-a-a-a-a-t-e-s writing. He is not a creative thinker, and his brain tends to shut down when given a writing assignment because he dreads it so much.

He is starting high school this year, so I decided that 9th grade would be the year that we focused on writing. I was not looking forward to it until I stumbled across Apologia’s Writers in Residence Curriculum. Could it be the answer for my reluctant writer?

I downloaded the huge free sample and pored over it. A glimmer of hope was revealed on those pages.

Our Homeschool Writing Curriculum

Writers in Residence is a complete writing curriculum for grades 4-8. (Or 9th if your kid hates writing! 😀 ) It is biblically-based, and includes lessons on grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

The student text and workbook are combined into one, so this curriculum is pretty much open & go.There is a daily schedule in the book that allows my son to keep track of his work.

The assignments are a good mix of reading and writing. There are interesting interviews with Christian authors throughout the book.

This curriculum works so well for my student because the writing is broken up into itty-bitty tasks. Only one thing is focused on in each section. There are lots of clear examples with each assignment so my son understands exactly what to do.

Each unit includes a rubric so the student will know what is expected out of the assignment. It is written in clear, simple terms. Vocabulary words are highlighted in the text and defined in the margin.

Here’s a little tip that might help your resistant writer. My son likes to use Frixion pens for writing assignments. It gives him the smoothness of a pen with the ability to erase like a pencil. It erases completely, leaving no trace behind.

I don’t expect Writers in Residence to be a magic potion and turn my son into a writing lover, but stranger things have happened. 😉 I am just thrilled to no longer be fighting the writing battle!
