English Communication Skills: An Open and Go Curriculum from Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum

Paradigm English Communication Skills

In my ongoing quest to find a Language Arts curriculum that comfortably fits my kids, I decided to use the last two months of our school year to try out Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum (PAC) with my 7th grade daughter & 9th grade son.

I used the Literature and Philosophy and Economics courses for my two oldest daughters, so I had high hopes that PAC’s English Communication Skills would be a good fit for my younger kids.

One thing I love about Paradigm Accelerated Curriculum is that it is broken up into several small workbooks. It is very portable and encourages a sense of accomplishment as each section is completed. I split up the English Communication Skills set and assigned different workbooks to my two kids based on the skills I wanted each to cover.

English Communication Skills

PAC’s English Communication Skills curriculum covers several important basics:

  • grammar & punctuation
  • sentence structure
  • prefixes/suffixes
  • figures of speech
  • typing
  • story and poetry types
  • formal & informal letter writing
  • note taking skills
  • writing process

Each lesson starts with a vignette of a positive role model, including many historical figures. Strong character and moral values are focused on as a way to build communication skills. PAC is not a Christian curriculum but it does incorporate old-fashioned virtues and standards.

PAC Vocabulary

Each workbook lesson is comprised of fill-in-the-blank and multiple choice questions. There is also a place at the end of each lesson to write out the Life Principle. (Hello copywork!)

The Teacher’s Resource Kit contains quizzes, tests, and answers to the lessons. It also comes with a code for a digital download.

Open & Go Homeschool Curriculum

Here’s the best thing about this curriculum: there is very little planning!! Your child can work though each section as quickly or as slowly as needed. I look through the text each week and assign pages based on the length of the lesson and the busy-ness of our week. Sometimes I will even skip a few pages if it is something we have thoroughly covered.

My son, who can’t STAND Language Arts, has already requested to use this curriculum for next year. He enjoys the interesting reading selections which incorporate a little history into the lessons.
