St. Patrick’s Day Research for Independent Learning

St Patrick's Day Research for Independent Learning

My kids seem to really retain the info that they dig up on their own rather than being spoon-fed dry facts. A research assignment can easily overwhelm younger kids, however. They are unsure about where to start and what information is needed. Plus there is the matter of internet safety – you can’t just turn your kid loose on Google search!

I created some St. Patrick’s Day Research printables that will encourage independent learning while giving some guidance. This series of questions uses four articles to learn about the life of St. Patrick and the history of St. Patrick’s Day.

The articles are on these websites:

I use LiveBinders to organize links for my kids. Each link opens up inside the online binder. I put the above links into a St. Patrick’s Day Binder to provide a simple way for you to share them with your child.

If you want to take it a step further, you can assign a paper using the facts gathered on these worksheets.

Christina Rossetti Poems to Color

This post contains affiliate links.

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: Poetry! Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

Christina Rossetti Poems to Color

My kids were introduced to Christina Rossetti through First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind. Her simple poems are easy to learn and appealing to young children. Sing-Song is a collection of her nursery rhymes. This sweet set of children’s poem can also be found online for free.

singsong

If A Pig Wore A Wig

If a pig wore a wig,
What could we say?
Treat him as a gentleman,
And say “Good day.”

If his tail chanced to fail,
What could we do? —
Send him to the tailoress
To get one new.

I decided to use a few of Christina Rossetti’s poems to create some coloring pages for my kids. (I also have a set for Robert Louis Stevenson.) These can be used for copywork, or print the poems on cardstock and place in page protectors for a memory work notebook.

Poppins Book Nook: The Christmas Star

This post contains affiliate links.

Beyond Our Planet

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: Beyond Our Planet. Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

We didn’t really have time in our schedule this month to fit in an outer space unit, so I put my thinking cap on to figure out something that would fit the theme AND our current interests. I know it’s a bit early, but The Christmas Star fills both of those requirements. We had such a good time creating a sparkly star garland to display at Christmas time.

We chose Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story  as our companion book. It is a sweet story about all of creation looking forward to the birth of Christ. I am reminded of these song lyrics…”And Heaven and nature sing”.

 Song of the Stars

There are a couple of videos about stars that my older kids love:

The Star of Betlhehem

The Star of Bethlehem is a fascinating look at the science and history behind the star in the nativity story. Rick Larson explains what could have caused such a bright star, and how the wise men would have tracked it. So amazing!

Indescribable

Indescribable is full of mind-blowing photos and facts about stars and solar systems. Louie Giglio is a very engaging speaker, and he shows how the heavens declare the glory of God.

Sparkly Christmas Star Garland

Our star garland is so simple but soooo pretty. I wish I knew how to take a decent pic so you could see all the sparkle. :)

Our supplies:

star supplies

We have a giant bag of assorted buttons, so Sweetpea got busy picking out the white, ivory, and pearl ones while I was cutting out stars. I made a printable pattern of four different sizes of stars and just printed several copies out on cardstock, but you can use them as tracing patterns if you don’t want to use all of the sizes.

Next, I outlined the stars with white school glue and Sweetpea enthusiastically sprinkled the glitter. We gave each size of star its own design. I used a hot glue gun to add button to the centers of the stars.

Finally, I hot glued the stars to a long piece of the baker’s twine. We are so pleased with our star garland and can’t wait to pull it back out in December.
