wfmw – buying stuff on craigslist

For those of you who aren’t familiar with craigslist, it is an online classifieds site. You can buy stuff, sell stuff, look for a job, etc. I love, love, love it! The key to finding great items for a great price is to check it often. You can even add a particular category or search to your feed reader by clicking on the RSS button in the bottom right corner of the page.

Here are a few of the goodies we’ve bought:

  • LoveSac SuperSac for our gameroom for $65 (retail $719)
  • twin captain’s bed w/ bookcase headboard for $40
  • a stove for $20!! We just moved and our new house didn’t have a stove. The appliances are white, which I’m not fond of, and my refrigerator is black. I decided to get a white stove with a black oven door to tie everything together until we can replace them. I was thrilled to find an older stove in great shape – it just needed a $15 plug!
  • Broyhill Chair & 1/2 with storage ottoman in like-new condition for $300 (retail $1200)

Sometimes you will come across a real treasure without even looking for it. I recently bought a little animated singing Christmas tree for only $4. We had just thrown ours away because it was falling apart. Normally that would not be a big deal, but it belonged to our son Elijah who we lost several years ago to Leukemia. Everyone loved that little tree! I knew I had to find another and pictured spending big bucks on Ebay. It was a little gift from God the day I saw the ad on craigslist. So keep your eyes peeled – you never know what you might find!

We haven’t done much buying on Craigslist, but we HAVE done selling, and it has been wonderful! We’ve sold everything we’ve ever listed, and usually within 48 hours.

I love CL, also! I bought a near-new bassinnette for $13 (she was selling it for $10, but I gave her a few extra dollars since we met halfway); an Eddie Bauer double stroller for $50 (used 6 times); etc.
