Poppins Book Nook: The Christmas Star

Beyond Our Planet

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: Beyond Our Planet. Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

We didn’t really have time in our schedule this month to fit in an outer space unit, so I put my thinking cap on to figure out something that would fit the theme AND our current interests. I know it’s a bit early, but The Christmas Star fills both of those requirements. We had such a good time creating a sparkly star garland to display at Christmas time.

We chose Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story  as our companion book. It is a sweet story about all of creation looking forward to the birth of Christ. I am reminded of these song lyrics…”And Heaven and nature sing”.

 Song of the Stars

There are a couple of videos about stars that my older kids love:

The Star of Betlhehem

The Star of Bethlehem is a fascinating look at the science and history behind the star in the nativity story. Rick Larson explains what could have caused such a bright star, and how the wise men would have tracked it. So amazing!

Indescribable

Indescribable is full of mind-blowing photos and facts about stars and solar systems. Louie Giglio is a very engaging speaker, and he shows how the heavens declare the glory of God.

Sparkly Christmas Star Garland

Our star garland is so simple but soooo pretty. I wish I knew how to take a decent pic so you could see all the sparkle. 🙂

Our supplies:

  • white cardstock
  • free star pattern printable
  • white & pearl buttons
  • white & gold baker’s twine – I got my little package on clearance at Target for .75
  • white school glue
  • hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • crystal glitter

star supplies

We have a giant bag of assorted buttons, so Sweetpea got busy picking out the white, ivory, and pearl ones while I was cutting out stars. I made a printable pattern of four different sizes of stars and just printed several copies out on cardstock, but you can use them as tracing patterns if you don’t want to use all of the sizes.

Next, I outlined the stars with white school glue and Sweetpea enthusiastically sprinkled the glitter. We gave each size of star its own design. I used a hot glue gun to add button to the centers of the stars.

Finally, I hot glued the stars to a long piece of the baker’s twine. We are so pleased with our star garland and can’t wait to pull it back out in December.

Monthly Encouragement for REAL Moms {October Edition}

Monthly Encouragement for REAL Moms

This time of year is always so busy for our family. School is in full swing along with all of the activities that brings, we have several birthdays and our anniversary, then comes Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas. I finally have time to collapse once January rolls around again.

I get so frustrated with myself when things get crazy because I end up racing through the days from one “Have to” to the next, when I KNOW there is a better way.  Last night I decided to take some time to search for some ways to slow down and be intentional about savoring this life that God has given me. I miss so much of the beauty when I am only focused on my To Do list. I’m guessing that I am not the only one who feels this way, so I am sharing my finds with you. <3

John 10

An abundant life. That is the gift we’ve been given through Christ. I titled this post Encouragement for REAL moms because that’s what we all are. Perfect might work on Pinterest, but not in everyday life. REAL also stands for Refreshing Encouragement for an Abundant Life. I hope these sites encourage you as much as they have me!

His Mercy is New is sharing 31 Days of Praying the Scriptures for Your Family. There is an October prayer calendar to print, and also some prayer bookmarks. I am excited about her new Advent Prayer Journal for Moms that just came out.

The Purposeful Mom offers 31 Days of Hope for Moms: Biblical Encouragement and Practical Help for Challenging Moments.

Hugs and Punches has created a beautiful memory verse phone lock screen for her subscribers. (I didn’t even know you could do that!)

Worshipful Living put together a Fall Management Binder that includes sermon and quiet time printables.

There are some Monster-themed Lessons at Made 2 B Creative that would be fun to do with your kiddos this time of year. They deal with pride, selfishness, and jealousy.

How long has it been since you colored with your child? Print out this Ecclesiastes coloring page and hang it on the fridge when you are done.

On the practical side, there is a Super Duper Meal Planning Round-Up over at Diamonds in the Rough.

Ephesians 3

All of these links, and more, can be found on my Encouragement for REAL Moms Pinterest Board.

How do YOU slow down and savor the moments God gives you?
