Poppins Book Nook: Sing the Presidents

February 24, 2014 By: amyswandering3 Comments

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook and this month’s theme is Presidents!
Feel free to join in the fun with the linky at the end.

smart about the presidents

We chose to read Smart About the Presidents, a colorful book of interesting facts about our country’s leaders. Each president has his own page that lists the years of his term and some very interesting background information. Did you know that George Washington’s staff brushed his horse’s teeth every day? Or that Calvin Coolidge had a pet raccoon?

We really needed to work on memorizing the presidents, and a popular way of doing that is to sing the names to the tune of “Ten Little Indians”. There is something about putting words to music that makes it stick! I created a printable with all of the names broken up into groups to match the tune. You are welcome to download a copy for yourself!

Poppins Book Nook #10: Greek Mythology

January 28, 2014 By: amyswandering2 Comments

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook and this month’s theme is Greek Mythology!
Feel free to join in the fun with the linky at the end.

We were not able to get a project done this month because we’ve been battling bronchitis. Instead of an activity, I thought I would share some fun FREE resources to use when studying Greek mythology.

the story of the greeks

Would you believe our favorite book on the subject is a FREE kindle ebook? It is The Story of the Greeks by H. A. Guerber. She starts off the book writing about the Greek myths as if they are recorded history, weaving them into a seamless story that eventually winds it’s way into known history. (She does state in the beginning that she is creating a story from the myths, and I had a discussion with my kids about myths vs. history before we started reading. We also had a good talk about what the Bible has to say about false gods.) We just love her style of writing!

Greek Mythology: It’s Greek to Me is a fun set of lessons at Mensa for Kids.

Rick Riordan has a Guide to Greek Mythology and several Teacher’s Guides to his popular Percy Jackson series. My kids love those books!

Older kids can work on a Greek Mythology Research Assignment.

Greek Mythology Word Puzzles will familiarize kids with tricky names.

Add some Greek Myth Coloring Pages to your notebook.

Poppins Book Nook #9: A Turkey for Thanksgiving

November 26, 2013 By: amyswandering2 Comments

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook and this month’s theme is animals! Feel free to join in the fun with the linky at the end.

Of course the animal on my kiddos’ minds this month is the turkey. We moved far away from family this summer, and this is the first year that we have ever made an entire Thanksgiving meal. We compared weights and prices searching for the perfect bird. We calculated how long it needed to thaw, and then we hunted down a delicious brine recipe.

One of our favorite Thanksgiving books is A Turkey for Thanksgiving, a sweet story about a turkey who gets invited over for Thanksgiving dinner but is afraid of being the main course.

Because life has been busy this month, I decided to round up some great turkey activities instead of create one:

  • Turkey Talk: A Unit Study on the Science of Turkeys
  • Turkey Fun Mini Pack
  • Turkey Cutting Practice
  • Build a Turkey
  • Turkey Shape Count & Graph
  • Parts of a Turkey
  • Fingerprint Turkeys

These are some more of our favorite turkey books:

A Plump and Perky Turkey: The residents of Squawk Valley think they can outsmart the turkeys, but one proves to be too clever.

Amelia Bedelia Talks Turkey: You can just imagine the craziness that surrounds Amelia Bedelia when she helps with the Thanksgiving play.

Autumn is my favorite season, so OF COURSE that is what we focused on ;). I made an Autumn Find worksheet for Sweetpea to do after we talked about the different seasons. It was interesting to look at the seasons on a preschool level so she would recognize them.

October Math Poems

October Math Poem Worksheets

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook and this month’s theme is School! Hmmm, that’s a tricky one for homeschoolers, so we decided to go with an education theme.

One of the books we have loved over the years is Mathematickles!, a book of Math poems found in nature.

mathematickles

Mathematickles! takes words, math, and seasons, and rolls them all up into beautiful word pictures. For example:

“holes + nuts – nuts = squirrel hide & seek”

and

“maple leaves + puddle = crimson ships”

I love how these poems combine creativity with logic, so I made an October Math Poem worksheet to help my kids create some seasonal poetry equations of their own.

October Math Poems Printable

A few of the ones we wrote:

stick + sticky – dental fillings = caramel apple

1/3 moonlight + 1/3 sunset + 1/3 sunrise = candy corn

pumpkin ÷ imagination = jack o’ lantern

trick x treat = candy ’til Easter

Feel free to download the October Math Poems worksheet, and PLEASE share some of your creations in the comments!!
