Christina Rossetti Poems to Color

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: Poetry! Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

Christina Rossetti Poems to Color

My kids were introduced to Christina Rossetti through First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind. Her simple poems are easy to learn and appealing to young children. Sing-Song is a collection of her nursery rhymes. This sweet set of children’s poem can also be found online for free.

singsong

If A Pig Wore A Wig

If a pig wore a wig,
What could we say?
Treat him as a gentleman,
And say “Good day.”

If his tail chanced to fail,
What could we do? —
Send him to the tailoress
To get one new.

I decided to use a few of Christina Rossetti’s poems to create some coloring pages for my kids. (I also have a set for Robert Louis Stevenson.) These can be used for copywork, or print the poems on cardstock and place in page protectors for a memory work notebook.

Poppins Book Nook: Little House in the Kitchen

December 1, 2014 By: amyswandering1 Comment

**Due to a family emergency, this post is a week late. Thanks for your patience!**

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: To the Kitchen! Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

Little House Recipes & Activities

The Little House on the Prairie series has been a favorite of mine since I was a young girl. I read them over & over until the covers fell off. One of the things I loved the most about them were the detailed descriptions of what they ate, and how they prepared their food.

We had an unexpectedly-crazy month, so instead of doing a kitchen project, I decided to plan ahead for a little Christmas Funschool. We like to shelve most of the books in December and have some hands-on fun.

little house christmas

We are going to use two books as the base of our unit: A Little House Christmas Treasury and The Little House Cookbook.

little house cookbook

These websites also have some Little House recipes:

  • Almanzo’s Pancakes, Cornmeal Pudding with Molasses, and Snow Candy are among the recipes you will find at Little House Books.
  • The recipes at Laura’s Prairie House include Horehound Candy, Parched Corn, and Vinegar Pie.

We’ll throw in some activities like churning butter, and figure out the amount of food we would have needed for our covered wagon.

We might even do a free lapbook:

  • Little House in the Big Woods
  • Little House on the Prairie
  • Farmer Boy
  • On the Banks of Plum Creek
  • By the Shores of Silver Lake
  • The Long Winter
  • Little Town on the Prairie
  • These Happy Golden Years
  • The First Four Years

We’ll round out our study with a Little House Virtual Field Trip.

Don’t forget to print out your November Lapbook to document your adventure this month.

Poppins Book Nook: The Christmas Star

Beyond Our Planet

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: Beyond Our Planet. Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

We didn’t really have time in our schedule this month to fit in an outer space unit, so I put my thinking cap on to figure out something that would fit the theme AND our current interests. I know it’s a bit early, but The Christmas Star fills both of those requirements. We had such a good time creating a sparkly star garland to display at Christmas time.

We chose Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story  as our companion book. It is a sweet story about all of creation looking forward to the birth of Christ. I am reminded of these song lyrics…”And Heaven and nature sing”.

 Song of the Stars

There are a couple of videos about stars that my older kids love:

The Star of Betlhehem

The Star of Bethlehem is a fascinating look at the science and history behind the star in the nativity story. Rick Larson explains what could have caused such a bright star, and how the wise men would have tracked it. So amazing!

Indescribable

Indescribable is full of mind-blowing photos and facts about stars and solar systems. Louie Giglio is a very engaging speaker, and he shows how the heavens declare the glory of God.

Sparkly Christmas Star Garland

Our star garland is so simple but soooo pretty. I wish I knew how to take a decent pic so you could see all the sparkle. 🙂

Our supplies:

  • white cardstock
  • free star pattern printable
  • white & pearl buttons
  • white & gold baker’s twine – I got my little package on clearance at Target for .75
  • white school glue
  • hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • crystal glitter

star supplies

We have a giant bag of assorted buttons, so Sweetpea got busy picking out the white, ivory, and pearl ones while I was cutting out stars. I made a printable pattern of four different sizes of stars and just printed several copies out on cardstock, but you can use them as tracing patterns if you don’t want to use all of the sizes.

–>> DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE STAR PATTERNS <<–

button stars1

Next, I outlined the stars with white school glue and Sweetpea enthusiastically sprinkled the glitter. We gave each size of star its own design. I used a hot glue gun to add button to the centers of the stars.

two stars1

Finally, I hot glued the stars to a long piece of the baker’s twine. We are so pleased with our star garland and can’t wait to pull it back out in December.

Poppins Book Nook: Leapin’ Lizards

PBN Leapin Lizards

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: The Wild West. Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

We decided to focus on the critters of the Wild West. Lizard’s Home is a cute story about a lizard who has to outwit a sneaky snake that has invaded his home.

We have lizards everywhere around our home, and we enjoy studying their patterns and colors. I printed out a lizard outline for Sweetpea to decorate. She colored it, cut it out all by herself, and glued on pieces of brightly-colored chenille stems. She even added accessories. Doesn’t every lizard need a bright pink scarf?

Feel free to download the lizard pattern if your child would like to decorate one too.

Poppins Book Nook: My Little Pet Shop

August 25, 2014 By: amyswandering8 Comments

PBN What Will I Be

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: What Will I Be When I Grow Up? Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

So, when I asked Sweetpea what she wants to be when she grows up, she enthusiastically replied, “A pet shop worker!”. Since she adores animals, this came as no surprise, though I’m pretty sure she thinks that all a pet shop employee does is play with critters all day. 😉

We have the sweetest book to go with our animal theme. When I Grow Up is a precious story about a little turtle who snuggles up next to his daddy and tells him what he wants to be when he gets older.

When I Grow Up

Sweetpea has quite a few animal toys, so I decided to make her a printable pet shop set. I left the prices blank to give her some number writing practice. If I can ever remember where I put my handy-dandy laminator, I am going to laminate all of the price tags so she can use a dry erase marker and change it up. She carefully cut out the tags, filled in the prices, and set up shop.

pet shop 1

The first set of price tags in the My Little Pet Shop set features the typical pet store animals. The next two pages include some of her favorite stuffed animals. I also added some sea creatures and buggy friends to give a silly twist. Please help yourself to a FREE set for your little animal lover!
