Free Writing Guides

July 7, 2011 By: amyswandering3 Comments

free writing guides

I was thrilled to discover the fantastic writing guides at Teaching That Makes Sense.

Look closely, the downloads are listed on the left.

Some of my favorites:

~Writing Strategy Guide – my older kids will be working their way through this attention-grabbing workbook

~ Prompted Writing – starting on page 25, there is a Glossary of Prompts and 1-a-page printable prompts

~ Learning Across the Curriculum – almost 200 pages of ideas on combining writing skills with other subjects

~ Practical Punctuation – handy little guide that I am printing out for everyone to put in their notebooks

~What is Good Writing? – more handy info

~Learning Patterns – writing and reading patterns – I think we might have a weekly writer’s workshop to go over some of these things (maybe I will model on the whiteboard?)

~Read Like a Reader, Read Like a Writer –  great exercises for learning to look at a piece of writing through both the eyes of a reader and a writer

~An Introduction to the Writing Process – teaching the writing process and instructions for setting up a writer’s workshop notebook

~Assessing Writing – know what to look for when correcting your child’s writing

Which ones will you be using?

Resources Galore

July 7, 2011 By: amyswandering1 Comment

I’ve spent the morning with my printer going non-stop while trying to get this next school year planned & filed.

I am using  FREE resources from several wonderful education sites. They are packed with lessons, planners, worksheets, and more!

Rather than just sharing links to the possibly-overwhelming websites, I am going to give you a walkthrough of several sites.

I will highlight my favorite resources and {hopefully} show you that you don’t have to spend a ton of money for a quality education.

Stay tuned!

WFMW – Summer Science Box

June 29, 2011 By: amyswandering3 Comments

I got this idea from Thrifty Decorating and it was a hit!!

I printed the experiments onto cardstock, along with the box rules, and put them on a ring. The cards stay inside a storage baggie when in use. The tools are in a smaller tub, which sits inside of a large a tub that holds all of the experiment ingredients.

Leave me a comment if you would like me to email you my experiment card file.

Box Contents:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • dish soap
  • coffee filters
  • baggies
  • straws
  • string
  • clear plastic punch cups
  • plastic spoons
  • bag of misc junk
  • magnets
  • tongs
  • funnels
  • measuring cup
  • measuring spoons
  • droppers

Box Rules:

  • Put newspaper or plastic tablecloth on the table.
  • Keep instruction cards in the baggie at all times.
  • Read all directions before starting
  • Wash & dry items completely when finished.
  • Put tools in the correct tubs.
  • Do not use items in tubs for anything but experiments.
  • Any arguing will get you banned from the box for 2 days.

Experiments I used:

  • Magnetic Pickups
  • Fizz & Bubble
  • Exploding Lunch Bag
  • Music in the Kitchen
  • Color Climbers
  • Introduce Yourself to a Worm
  • Levitate a Paperclip
  • Paper Noise
  • How to Jump a Mile

I plan on adding more experiments as the summer goes on.

Happy Experimenting!!

June 28, 2011 By: amyswandering3 Comments

I am right smack in the middle of planning our next school year, which of course involves a binder full of lovely planner pages.

My free printable planner links post has been one of the most popular on this blog over the past couple of years.I figured it was about time to weed out all the dead links and add some new ones!

Enjoy all of these wonderful tools, and be sure to leave their creators a note of thanks if you use them! 🙂   *=newly-added links
