Add Some Seasonal Fun to Dinnertime + Giveaway

February 15, 2014 By: amyswandering1 Comment

My family loves to put together fun dinners for each holiday! We plan out the menu, decorate with a bit of whimsy, and sometimes invite friends over to join in the celebration.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time on your festive meal. Dollar Tree and Target’s Dollar Spot are great places to pick up table scatter or confetti, paper plates & napkins, and some festive decor like garlands and streamers.

We hang swirly cutouts from our chandelier.

I will use St.Patrick’s Day to give you an idea of what one of our seasonal dinners looks like. Green is the name of the game! It is a minor holiday to some, but Hubby and I lived in Dublin for a year before we got married and we make a big deal out of it.

Here are some ideas to create a festive atmosphere:

  • Make a Leprechaun Trap
  • Cover the table with a shamrock tablecloth
  • Grow some Shamrocks (best to start by the end of February)
  • Turn a green plastic derby hat upside down and use it for a bread basket
  • Glue together some Paper Shamrocks for a centerpiece
  • Do some St. Patrick’s Day Mad Libs
  • Wear green (of course!)

We have the same meal every year: Beef in Guinness, Cabbage and Bacon, Boiled Potatoes, and Irish Brown Bread. After dinner, we have tea with imported biscuits (cookies) and sweets (candy) that we buy in the British foods section at the grocery store. We eat these while having a rousing sing-along with our High Kings DVD.

To start off your St.Patrick’s Day dinner tradition, I would love to give one of you this beautiful Irish Shamrock Table Runner.

Growing Your Blog While Managing Your Home Review & Giveaway

January 16, 2014 By: amyswandering1 Comment

Growing Your Blog Review

I started this blog years ago, when the bloggy world was just a little community of people who had a few things in common. There was no following anyone on Pinterest, or making graphics for every post on Picmonkey. As the internet gained speed, and blogging became commonplace, I’ve had to take a crash course to keep up with all the changes.

A blog can be a blessing for a family or it can become a curse. It is very easy to pour hours into writing, editing, creating, and promoting. Balancing blog and home is a challenge. Jacinda from Growing Home has launched an ebook this week that will help create a plan and save you from wasting time hunting for the info you need to kickstart your blog. Her blog has grown ten times in size and now generates a five figure income annually.

Growing Your Blog While Managing Your Home offers a wealth of information to help you set priorities and manage your time. The ebook is divided into four parts:

Part 1: Creating a Vision and Maintaining a Schedule starts with questioning whether blogging is right for you. It will help you set priorities and manage your time online and in the home.

Part 2: Content and Design covers a long list of tips for creating a quality site that is going to draw and keep a reader’s attention.

Part 3: Growth and Monetization  walks you through ways to grow your numbers and monetize your blog.

Part 4: Logistics and Legalities dives into the not-so-fun part of blogging, like dealing with ugly comments or people who steal your content. This is my favorite section because Jacinda reminds us that we are to react softly because the name of Christ is at stake. Such a powerful and important reminder!

You can see the entire Table of Contents HERE.

growing launch week

{1000th Post!} $250 Timberdoodle Giveaway

November 26, 2013 By: amyswanderingcomment

I am so excited that a huge giveaway to one of my favorite homeschool companies just happened to land on my 1000th post!! Yes, I have been blogging since the dark ages.

Are you familiar with Timberdoodle Co.? Theirs was one of the very first catalogs that I received when I started homechooling 12 years ago. In addition to great curriculum packages, they offer some really wonderful educational toys and games. Their gift guide has ideas for every age and price-range, and a $250 gift certificate would definitely knock some names off your Christmas gift list. Or you might use it to do a mid-year curriculum switcharoo if needed.

Our very own Bow of Bronze Launch Team has teamed up to bring you this very special giveaway to help celebrate the launch of Homeschool Encouragement.

Homeschool Encouragement Giveaway

This giveaway has not been sponsored by the Timberdoodle Co in any way – rather this lovely team of bloggers has come together and each contributed towards the prize. We are so pleased to have the support of our amazing readers, and this is one way we can bless you in return.

Moshi Monsters Super Fan Pack {Giveaway}

October 24, 2013 By: amyswanderingcomment

Moshi Monsters Logo - Copy

My kids love Moshi Monsters and have each had a free account for several years. They were so excited when they found out that we were going to be doing a giveaway on the blog!

Moshi Monsters live in Monstro City. Your child creates a Monster and takes care of it by providing food & entertainment. Food is purchased with Rox, which are earned by playing the Daily Challenge and solving Practice Puzzles. The puzzles might test vocabulary, math, or logic skills. The puzzles get harder or easier, depending on whether your child is advancing or struggling.

There are limited social networking features on Moshi Monsters, providing a safe place for my kids and their friends to play. They send each other gifts and visit each other’s houses. During the sign-up process, the parent will receive an email that must be approved and then you will be able to choose what info you do & don’t want available on your child’s profile.

With so much fun available on the free membership, you might be wondering why anyone would purchase a membership. I did too, until we received a free 3-month membership to try out. It unlocks a whole list of new places to visit, missions to complete, and moshlings to collect! Membership is $5.95 a month, or get one year for $49.95- that is the price of just one new video game! Individual memberships can get quite pricey with several kids, so we decided to experiment and let three kids share the membership. They created the monster together and either take turns playing, or play together. I’m thinking a one-year membership might show up at Christmas 😉 . If you would like to give one as a gift, you can buy membership cards at Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, GameStop, Walgreens, and 7-11.

Moshi Monsters has a new line of Moshling Collectible Figures, just perfect for stocking stuffers! They start at only $2.99 and can be purchased at select Justice and Build a Bear stores.

It contains:

Review & MEGA Giveaway: Philosophy Adventure

August 2, 2013 By: amyswanderingcomment

This post contains affiliate links. I received a free copy of Philosophy Adventure  for the purpose of giving my honest review.

Philosophy Adventure™–Pre-Socrates is a brand new curriculum from Stacy Farrell. I introduced it to you a couple of months ago, and now we have had time to really dig in and see how it works. You are going to love it!

Complete-Set.Med_Before I share my thoughts on this curriculum, let me give you a little glimpse into what I look for when choosing courses for my kids. I don’t want to waste our time with busywork, so mindless worksheets and pointless assignments are out. If the text is so dull that my eyes want to roll back in my head, I am not going to make my kids plow through it. This sometimes proves to be a problem when searching for upper level courses.

That’s not a problem with Philosophy Adventure! The text is engaging, the book is visually stunning, and the assignments are meaty yet broken down into bite-sized sections so my girls don’t feel overwhelmed. Stacy Farrell challenges my kids to stretch their brains with deep thoughts, but she doesn’t just leave them there. She cheers them on to try hard and to always be ready to give an account of what they believe.

philosophy

Philosophy Adventure™–Pre-Socrates introduces us to Eight Famous Philosophers:

  • Thales
  • Pythagorus
  • Xenophanes
  • Heraclitus
  • Parmenides
  • Empedocles
  • Protagorus
  • Democritus

After reading about the life & times of each philosopher, we get to read one of his actual writings. That writing is compared and contrasted with a biblical worldview. Each lesson is divided into three assignments: Write, Think, and Speak

worldview

The thing I love most about this curriculum is the ease of use! Each assignment is broken down into very specific tasks, and they are color-coded to match the reading. The digital student book allows my girls to type & print their work. (Because handwriting the answers is soooooo torturous and out-dated, you know. ;))

A breakdown of the Philosophy Adventure™–Pre-Socrates set:

  • Reader – Philosopher stories, images, geography, biblical worldview, lessons and assignments
  • Student Workbook – Notebook pages, mapping, writing journal, and the most amazing writing checklists EVER!
  • Teacher Resources – Memory cards, timeline, maps & keys, quiz keys, instructions

Depending on how you choose to use it, Philosophy Adventure™–Pre-Socrates offers .25-.5 high school credit in these areas:

  • English Composition
  • World History/Geography
  • Speech/Communications
  • Logic/Critical Thinking

I want to leave you with one last observation. Stacy Farrell, the author, loves Jesus. I have had the privilege of interacting with her over the last few months and she believes what she writes. She has prayed over this study and for the ones who will read it. What a blessing!

Philosophy Adventure™–Pre-Socrates comes in four formats:

  • $89.95 Print Reader, Print Student Workbook, Digital Teacher’s Resources on CD
  • $69.95 Print Reader, Digital Student Workbook on CD, Digital Teacher’s Resources on CD
  • $49.95 Digital Reader on CD, Digital Student Workbook on CD, Digital Teacher’s Resources on CD
  • $39.95 Reader Digital Download, Student Workbook Digital Download, Teacher’s resources Digital Download

I recommend the $69.95 option. The readings and assignments are placed opposite each other in the Print Reader, but you will have to line them up yourself with the Digital Reader. View a SAMPLE of the first lesson.
