Free Snowflake Patterns & Templates

 Free Snowflake Patterns and Templates

Our family has a little snowflake party every year around the first of December. The supplies are simple: white copy paper and scissors. We fold and snip, then ooooooh and aaaaaah at the beautiful creations. The floor looks like we had a blizzard!

The easiest way to display the snowflakes is to gluestick them to the windows. They come off easily and cleanup just requires a towel and some warm water. Last year we used our snowflakes to create a Winter Wonderland. It was so pretty!!

We like to use these free templates for our snowflakes, because they tend to all start looking the same if we just freehand it. Decorative edge scissors also add a beautiful touch. Have fun crafting a snowstorm with your family!

Heirloom Advent Calendars

Heirloom Advent Calendars

There is a beautiful Advent House in the Christmas Vacation movie that has captivated me for years. (Note: It is NOT a family-friendly movie!) I love the way the warm lights shine through all the little windows as they are opened in the countdown to Christmas.

That house is crazy expensive, but an advent calendar doesn’t have to cost a fortune to be considered an heirloom. It just has to have value to YOUR family. Something that gets your kids all excited as it is pulled out of the box year after year.

For my family, that item is a hanging fabric Christmas tree with 24 pockets and a little stuffed Santa. I think I got it at the thrift store for $2. They take turns moving the Santa each day. My teenagers are just as eager to participate as the younger kids because it is tradition. They know that the Advent tree will be there every year, and they enjoy the shared memories.

I’ve put together a list of Heirloom Advent Calendar ideas. At the end of the list is a FREE option, and a link to several more advent calendars. If you don’t already have one, consider starting this new tradition with your family. Build the anticipation and wonder as it gets closer and closer to celebrating the day that a little baby came into the world and changed everything!

Poppins Book Nook: The Christmas Star

October 28, 2014 By: amyswandering8 Comments

Beyond Our Planet

It is time once again for Poppins Book Nook. This month’s theme is: Beyond Our Planet. Please join in the fun with the linky & giveaway at the end!

We didn’t really have time in our schedule this month to fit in an outer space unit, so I put my thinking cap on to figure out something that would fit the theme AND our current interests. I know it’s a bit early, but The Christmas Star fills both of those requirements. We had such a good time creating a sparkly star garland to display at Christmas time.

We chose Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story  as our companion book. It is a sweet story about all of creation looking forward to the birth of Christ. I am reminded of these song lyrics…”And Heaven and nature sing”.

 Song of the Stars

There are a couple of videos about stars that my older kids love:

The Star of Betlhehem

The Star of Bethlehem is a fascinating look at the science and history behind the star in the nativity story. Rick Larson explains what could have caused such a bright star, and how the wise men would have tracked it. So amazing!

Indescribable

Indescribable is full of mind-blowing photos and facts about stars and solar systems. Louie Giglio is a very engaging speaker, and he shows how the heavens declare the glory of God.

Sparkly Christmas Star Garland

Our star garland is so simple but soooo pretty. I wish I knew how to take a decent pic so you could see all the sparkle. 🙂

Our supplies:

  • white cardstock
  • free star pattern printable
  • white & pearl buttons
  • white & gold baker’s twine – I got my little package on clearance at Target for .75
  • white school glue
  • hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • crystal glitter

star supplies

We have a giant bag of assorted buttons, so Sweetpea got busy picking out the white, ivory, and pearl ones while I was cutting out stars. I made a printable pattern of four different sizes of stars and just printed several copies out on cardstock, but you can use them as tracing patterns if you don’t want to use all of the sizes.

–>> DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE STAR PATTERNS <<–

button stars1

Next, I outlined the stars with white school glue and Sweetpea enthusiastically sprinkled the glitter. We gave each size of star its own design. I used a hot glue gun to add button to the centers of the stars.

Finally, I hot glued the stars to a long piece of the baker’s twine. We are so pleased with our star garland and can’t wait to pull it back out in December.

Don’t forget to print out your October Lapbook to document your adventure this month.

Christopher Pop-In-Kins ~ Cuter than Elf on the Shelf

October 14, 2014 By: amyswanderingcomment

This post contain affiliate links.

I like the idea of having some silly make-believe elf fun (my kids are old enough to join in on the antics), but I’ve always thought the Elf on the Shelf looked a little creepy. I came across this cute Christopher Pop-In-Kins today and think I’ve finally found our elf! It has actually been around much longer than that other elf. 😉 It is usually $29.99, but is on sale right now for only $13.63. This price could change at any time, so grab it now and tuck it away for Christmas.
