Real Life Homeschooling: Back to School Chaos

September 11, 2013 By: amyswandering4 Comments

RLH

Real Life has been happening around here in the form of Back to School busy-ness. For the first couple of weeks, I hit the floor running and don’t stop until I collapse into bed at night. I like to start the school year with most of our work organized, but the days leading up to the first day of school can look a bit scary.

This was my desk, piled with (some of) the work to be sorted & filed:

I am going to turn the tables and ask YOU about Real Life and back-to-school.

Do you plan out your year, or just wing it?

I do a little of both. I divide up our books/workbooks by weeks and map out a general plan, but then give myself the freedom to add things or rearrange throughout the year.

Do you have to make a mess to get organized, or does the chaos drive you crazy?

I need to have everything piled up in front of me before I can start putting it in order.

How long does it take you to get back into the swing of things?

It takes us about two weeks of everyone moaning on the couch each morning before it becomes routine.

{Real Life Homeschooling} is a monthly blog hop that I co-host with 20+ bloggers. It is about turning the world into our classroom and showing how homeschooling happens in real life as well as during “school hours” .

Real Life Homeschooling: TV Summer School

August 13, 2013 By: amyswandering4 Comments

RLH

It is the last week of summer break for us, and that means Mommy is in planning mode!

I will spend the week pouring over our curriculum choices and mapping out our year. The kids know that their lazy bone days are coming to an end, so they will spend every waking moment watching TV and playing video games.

Real Life Homeschooling is about turning the world into our classroom, right? So to make myself feel better about my kids’ melting brains, I decided to call it TV Summer School.

Subjects:

Science   Myth Busters

History   Barrett-Jackson Auctions

Geography   House Hunters International

Culinary Arts   Chopped

Economics   Love It or List It

Arts & Crafts   Flea Market Flip

Nature Study   Duck Dynasty

Social Studies   Teen Beach Movie

Creative Writing   Merlin

Character Study   Sponge Bob

What show does your family enjoy together?

{Note: This post is intended as a tongue-in-cheek bit of fun. While I do think there is educational value in our daily activities, I don’t use these shows for actual school credit.}

Real Life Homeschooling: It’s Looking A Tad Froggy

July 9, 2013 By: amyswandering2 Comments

Our new house has a beautiful pool in the backyard!! There is no screen over it yet, so someone is constantly scooping debris out. A couple of weeks ago we walked out to find the top step covered with tiny black things. At first we thought they were buds from a nearby tree, or maybe tiny bugs. Two days later it was very clear what they were.

FROG EGGS!

Do you see all the little black dots? Those are thousands of frog eggs!

Hubby & I were grossed out, but the kids were beyond excited. Sad faces were displayed when we informed them that there was no way our pool was becoming a frog pond. They quickly scooped up a few to observe.

The excitement didn’t last for long, however …

It turns out our whole pool was infested with tadpoles, not just the top step!

Insert horror movie music here.

The kids’ wonder quickly turned to disgust, with the girls convinced that they had surely swallowed frog eggs the last time they went for a swim. Hubby & I had been planning on going to the pool store on Saturday to learn Pool Care 101, but we bee-lined it over and stocked up on chemicals to shock the pool.

Our cute little tadpoles are growing and changing each day. We learned some interesting things about tadpoles:

  • It takes at least 6 weeks to go from egg to tadpole to frog.
  • They will eat lettuce that has been boiled or frozen. (They will also eat eggs that haven’t hatched. Ewww!)
  • Once their legs appear, they will need rocks or dirt to climb on or they will drown.
  • A frog returns to where it hatched. We were told that at one time our pool was filled with nasty sludge – the perfect frog breeding ground.
