wfmw -backwards day

September 3, 2008 By: amyswandering6 Comments

It’s time for another Backwards Edition of WFMW, where I get to ask for a tip instead of give one. I’ve got two plaguing questions today:

1. Can you recommend a good heavy-duty, inexpensive iron? I would like to stay under $30, but I don’t know if that is realistic, so definitely nothing over $50.

2. Let’s talk coffee: I’ve only had the occasional cup here & there during my pregnancy, and I don’t want to go back to my 2 cup a day habit after the baby is born. I love my daily coffee, but hate being dependent on a caffeine fix. Do you know of a decaf brand that actually tastes like regular coffee? (And if you think most decaf tastes like regular coffee, well, thanks for the kind help but you are wrong :o) LOL

I look forward to reading your helpful answers – thanks!!!

have yourself an early little christmas

September 2, 2008 By: amyswanderingcomment

I spent some time yesterday shopping for craft supplies to get started on Christmas presents. I can’t believe it’s almost that time again! I want to share some helpful things to get your creativity wheels turning.
Skip to my Lou is using the month of September to post ideas for handmade gifts, and has included a printable planner. She has a cute little sidebar button so all the ideas will be in one handy spot.

It was in the comments to Skip to my Lou’s post that I found Handmade Holidays. They have some good ideas, with more on the way, as well as more helpful printable planner pages.

Finally, Graham Family Ministries is having a one week holiday sale on The 12-Week Holiday Planner for Christian Families. I was going to buy it this week anyway, so I’m very happy to save $4! (use code holidaysale) I want to encourage you to sign up for their monthly newsletter if you don’t get it. They offer so many encouraging articles, links and e-books. I’m really enjoying my Intentional Planner – the June-December 2008 is only $3 and 2009 is only $5.

Do you know of any new sites that are posting handmade holiday ideas? Please share them!

back to the drawing board

I’m going to be re-arranging the blog again, just in case you drop by & it’s a mess! I wanted a wider posting area, but these background colors are just depressing – so I’m switching back to my old 4-column template.

homeschool memoirs

August 25, 2008 By: amyswandering5 Comments

HSBA has come up with a fun way to keep track of your homeschool year by participating in Homeschool Memoirs. A new theme will be posted every Wednesday. This week’s assignment is a peek into why we homeschool.

My name is Amy and I will soon be a mom of 5 kiddos (and we have a forever-4 yr. old in Heaven). I’ve been married to my best friend for almost 16 years. Today we started our seventh year of homeschooling, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m going to use being 8 months pregnant as an excuse to dig into my archives. The following is part of a post I did last year (you can read the whole post here if you are bored & have nothing better to do. HA!).

I can’t remember why I first considered homeschooling. I know it was about 9 years ago, when our oldest was two. I had a friend who was doing Five in a Row with her daughter & it looked like so much fun! I’m always up for a good round of fun, so maybe that was what lured me. I’ve always loved school – I was a preschool teacher at the time and my “plan” was to get my degree as soon as my kids were in school & teach full time. Whooo, God must get the biggest kick out of me. A short time later, I found out that my sister-in-law was planning to homeschool her kids too.

Here’s some honesty for you: It took me several months to finally make the commitment to homeschool. (Hubby was on board right away.) I had big PLANS for when my kids went off to school, important things like volunteer work & starting a mommy support group & having a clean house. I was very selfish and it was painful to let go of those dreams, but God was patiently calling me and I knew I had no choice :o)
