Thanksgiving Research Topics for Kids

We like to do holiday themed Funschool, so I went on a search for Thanksgiving research topics for kids. I found quite a few interesting sites! There are several ways these can be used, depending on how your child learns best.

  • Write a research paper
  • Make a notebooking page
  • Create a lapbook
  • Fill in a graphic organizer
  • Do a hands-on demonstration
  • Put on a play

Have fun learning about the history of Thanksgiving!

What Really Happened That First Thanksgiving? Compare the viewpoints of mainstream history resources, Native American educators, Tea Party activists, and Native American critics of Thanksgiving.

Sarah Josepha Hale  Who is she, and what is her connection to Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving and the Armed Forces  Research how the American armed forces have celebrated Thanksgiving over the years.

Colonial Thanksgiving Recipes  What was on the Thanksgiving menu during Colonial times? How would these items be prepared?

Talkin’ Turkey  Is the turkey native to North America? When did turkeys become domesticated? How did it become the national symbol of Thanksgiving?

Pilgrim Clothing Did Pilgrims only wear black and white? Where did they get their clothes? What kinds of fabrics did they use?

Life on the Mayflower  What were  the living conditions? What did they bring on the journey? Who were the passengers?

Choose someone from the Mayflower Passenger List and make up several diary entries about their experience.

19th Century Thanksgiving Traditions  Research the food, games, school lessons, and community events.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade  What is the history behind this famous tradition?

Map Your Thanksgiving Dinner  Find out where your favorite Thanksgiving menu ingredients originated.

Presidential Proclamations  Which presidents had a role in Thanksgiving Day history?

Weather Almanac  How did the weather affect the Pilgrims’ first year? What might their first year have looked like if the weather conditions had been different?

The Mayflower Compact  What is it? Why was it written? What does it say?

If you want some additional resources to go with these Thanksgiving research topics for kids, take a look at the book suggestions below. I am particularly fond of the scholastic books.
