Engaging the Culture with Christian Holiday Books for Kids

September 26, 2016 By: amyswandering1 Comment

*Disclosure: I received a free Love Letters book set for review purposes and am being compensated for my time. I am not required to give a positive review.  As always,  I am sharing my honest opinion with you.

Christian Holiday Books

We are one of those families who put out food for the reindeer and celebrate the birth of Jesus. We trunk or treat in the church parking lot. Holy Week is one of our favorite times of the year, but we also dye eggs and fill Easter baskets.

We have never lied to our children, but have instead chosen to embrace the joy and fun of each season while focusing on the One who brings true JOY. Our kids know that they better behave out of obedience to God’s word, and not because Santa is watching.

A Christian View of Holidays

I was so pleased to come across Soraya Diase Coffelt’s Love Letters book series. Each book is written as a friendly letter from a child to a popular holiday character. In each letter, the child explains the history of the holiday and points out what should be the focus.

The series currently consists of these books:

  • It’s Not About You, Mr. Pumpkin: A Love Letter About the True Meaning of Halloween
  • It’s Not About You, Mrs. Turkey: A Love Letter About the True Meaning of Thanksgiving
  • It’s Not About You, Mr. Santa Claus: A Love Letter About the True Meaning of Christmas

Two more books will be released in 2017: It’s Not About You Mr. Easter Bunny – A Love Letter About the True Meaning of Easter, and It’s Not About You Mrs. Firecracker – A Love Letter About the True Meaning of the Fourth of July.

What I love about these books is that they view the traditional holiday characters as old friends who just need a reminder about what each holiday is really about. Take a look at these snapshots of each book:

It’s Not About You, Mr. Pumpkin explores the legends and history of Halloween, trick-or-treating, black cats, bobbing for apples, and jack o’ lanterns. It emphasizes taking the focus off of evil things and putting it on on something better.

It’s Not About You, Mrs. Turkey looks back to the first Thanksgiving, and discusses how it became an American holiday. It emphasizes thanking God for His provision.

It’s Not About You, Mr. Santa Claus tells the nativity story to Santa and talks about gift giving. The emphasis is that Jesus is the best gift of all.

THANKS SO MUCH!! I was a winner in the drawing 😀 The books are now displayed on my little table with Fall decorations just awaiting some young visitors! (My baby is 25, LOL) They books are beautifully illustrated, stories are cute and meaningful and the ‘feel’ of the cover in my hands is so nice! Thanks again, God Bless.
