wfmw – 1 coupon a week

May 9, 2007 By: amyswandering3 Comments

wfmwheader_12.jpeg

Couponing is a hobby of mine. I love to clip them, organize them, get $180 worth of groceries for only $12. (Oh yes, I did!) Not everyone feels the same about those wonderful pieces of paper though. My friends have told me that that they don’t use enough coupons to make it worth the trouble to cut them out.

I am going to show you that it IS worth it, even if you only use one coupon a week. One .50 coupon a week adds up over the course of a year.

.50 x 52 weeks = $26.00 a year!

That’s $26.00 you didn’t have before you used only 1 coupon a week. You can go to the movies, buy a pair of shoes, pay down a bill, buy a couple of books. Now think of what you could do if you used 2 coupons a week!

Start by just cutting out the coupon(s) you want to use – there’s no need to cut them ALL out. An important thing to remember is to only choose a coupon for something you would normally buy, like detergent or shampoo.

Head on over to Rocks In My Dryer for some great tips!

wfmw no-stress present opening

May 2, 2007 By: amyswandering10 Comments

wfmwheader_12.jpeg

This week’s Works-For-Me-Wednesday has a birthday theme.

Present opening time was always the hardest part of a child’s party to me. Everyone crowds too close & there is always that one kid who thinks they need to help open all the presents. We play a game at our parties that solves this problem.

Have all the kids sit in a circle holding the present they brought. Turn on some fun music & tell the kids to start (slowly) passing the gifts around the circle. When the music stops, the birthday child opens whatever present is in his/her hand at the time. Repeat until all the gifts have been opened.

Not having to deal with a present free-for-all works for me! Head on over to Rocks In My Dryer for more great birthday ideas.

(Just wanted to let you know that I did not create this game. We played it at a party one of the kids went to many years ago, but with 4 kids I have no idea who’s party it was!)

wfmw tv guardian

April 24, 2007 By: amyswandering1 Comment

wfmwheader_124.jpeg

We’ve had this handy little thing for several years, but many of our friends have still never heard of it. I thought it was a safe bet that some of you have never heard of it either.

tvguard.jpeg

It easily hooks up to your tv and filters out foul language in TV shows and DVD’s. You have the option of just silence when censoring a bad word, or silence & subtitles at the bottom with a more appropriate phrase. The thinking behind this is that your eye will be drawn to the bottom of the screen to read the new phrase instead of reading the actor’s lips.

There are 2 settings. The stricter of the two also filters out things like sexual terms and taking the name of God in vain. I don’t recommend the strict setting if you are watching a program that actually IS about God 😉

A word of caution: You will have to consider carefully any movies that you recommend. There have been a couple of times that we talked about what a good storyline a movie had, only to realize later that we had no idea what got censored! (It will sometimes filter words that are not crude just because it doesn’t understand context or it was religious in nature.) We made sure to immediately correct the situation, and told our friends to run on down to Walmart & get their own TV Guardian.

April 18, 2007 By: amyswandering4 Comments

for-heather.jpg

Do you ever come across a story that leaves you feeling like you’ve been punched in the gut? That’s how I felt when I read that Heather has a brain tumor. Please, please take the time to read through her blog – you will be greatly blessed. Her faith is deep and her God is Mighty. She has already been through the fire once with her daughter Emma Grace. Emma Grace’s story is a must-read one too. It will bring tears to your eyes & raise the hairs on your arm; such a beautiful testimony!!

BooMama is giving us the chance to help Heather financially. She set up a Paypal donation button on her site. Please help her out if you are able – you can donate as little as $1, it all adds up. You can donate here. Please pray for her.

I found something that has my kids asking to do Spelling! If you have kids in 5th grade & below, get yourself to spellingtime.com. You have to sign up, but it is free. Just put in your child’s spelling words for the week and then they will be able to practice typing them, play a couple of games, and take a pop quiz. The quiz results will be sent to your email so you can know which words your child missed. Having my kids beg to do Spelling works for me!

wfmw – world’s best pancakes

April 11, 2007 By: amyswandering3 Comments

wfmwheader_12.jpeg

This recipe was in our paper a couple of weeks ago and I tried it for breakfast last Saturday. Oooooh baby!! They are even good without syrup. I doubled the recipe for our family of 6.

Cottage Cheese and Sour Cream Pancakes

2 eggs, beaten

2/3 cup cottage cheese

3/4 cup sour cream

1/2 t. lemon juice

3/4 t. salt

1/2 t. baking soda

1/2 cup flour

In large bowl, combine all ingredients. Let the batter stand uncovered for 10 minutes. Spray large skillet with cooking spray and heat to medium high. Using about 1/4 cup of batter for each pancake, cook until golden on one side and around edge. Turn and brown the other side. Serve hot. (Amy adds: slather with real butter….mmmm)

Head on over to Rocks In My Dryer for some really great tips!
