wfmw – restaurant menu planning

January 14, 2009 By: amyswandering2 Comments

wfmw-p

I haven’t tried this idea out, but I’m hoping it is something that will work for me! I get in a food rut from time to time and don’t have a clue what to fix, so we end up eating the same things week after week. I decided to look up the menus to some of our local restaurants for some menu inspiration. For the recipes I can’t quite figure out, I’ll either Google them or try to find them on the copycat sections of Razzle Dazzle Recipes, Recipe Goldmine or Recipe Link. I’m sharing one of my favorite copycat recipes at the bottom of this post- Baked Potato Soup from Bennigan’s (which has gone out of business in our area).

Here are some menus to get you started:

Chili’s

Applebee’s

Chipotle

IHOP

Johnny Carino’s

El Fenix

Olive Garden

Red Lobster

Panera Bread

On the Border

T.G.I.Friday’s

Subway

Cracker Barrel

Baked Potato Soup

2 c. chicken stock
2 c. milk
4 T. butter
¼ c. flour
3 bay leaves
¼ t. white pepper (I just use black)
1 large Idaho potato, peeled & finely diced
½ t. salt
1 c. sour cream
1 c. shredded cheddar cheese
½ c. green onion, finely sliced
½ c. crumbled bacon

Heat chicken stock & milk in large saucepan over medium-high heat to almost boiling. Remove from heat and set aside. Reduce heat to low. In a large soup pot, melt butter. Add flour, stirring constantly 3 minutes to cook flour and make a roux. Gradually add milk mixture to roux, pouring in a slow steady stream, while stirring vigorously to blend and eliminate lumps. Add bay leaves and pepper. Add diced potato & salt and continue to simmer over low heat 15 to 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender and soup thickens. Remove bay leaves. Lightly mash potatoes in soup and stir to blend well. Pour soup into individual bowls and top with sour cream, cheese, onion & bacon.
Serves 4.

wfmw – cookies for breakfast

Wouldn’t your kids love to eat cookies for breakfast? And wouldn’t you love for them to eat something healthier than a poptart before heading off to school? (Or in our case, to the living room.) I found the most delicious recipe at Heavenly Homemakers. They are healthy and super easy to make. Cookies for breakfast works for me!

wfmw – sticky wreath hook

December 3, 2008 By: amyswandering1 Comment

jumbo-hook

For years I used a metal wreath hanger that hung over the top of the door, but i had to find a new solution when we moved to our current house. Our front door has a window in the top of it and the wreath hanger not only didn’t fit properly, it looked terrible. I found my solution with the 3M Command Adhesive Jumbo Hook. They also have some nice metal ones. Mine is green and I bought it at Michaels for around $5. (I would have bought a metal one, but those are new to me.) It has been on my front door for three years now!

wfmw – make a wish with santa

November 26, 2008 By: amyswandering2 Comments

wfmw-p

Santa is just a fun, imaginary part of our Christmas. He shares court with Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and the Griswold Family. We try to focus on our Savior’s birth instead of what is under the tree, but this year -for the first time – my kids will be writing to Santa. Why this sudden change in tradition? Well, it’s because I received this in my email:

“The magic of Macy’s will unfold this holiday season as children throughout the Chicagoland area and across the country are invited to write and drop off their letters to Santa – stamped and addressed to Santa at the North Pole – at any Macy’s store in the designated Santa Mail letterbox. Each Macy’s store will have a BELIEVE Station that features a Believe Meter, letter-writing station with postcards and an official R.H. Macy Santa Mail letterbox.

For each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation up to $1 million to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The BELIEVE theme was inspired by the famous letter that eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote to the editor of the New York Sun in 1897 and the response she received saying “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”

As the mother of a child who had cancer, the Make-A-Wish Foundation is very dear to my heart. We never got the chance to take our Make-A-Wish trip, but I’ll never forget what a blessing it was to be offered the opportunity to get away and just be a family in the midst of all the chaos. If you have a Macy’s near you, take a minute to swing by Santa’s Post Office with your kids to drop off a letter. It is a simple act that will bless so many precious children who have had to grow up all too soon.
