WFMW – TV Shows for Picky Eaters

September 7, 2011 By: amyswanderingcomment

I have a couple of really picky eaters. And I don’t mean won’t-eat-veggies-unless-they-are-hidden-in-sauce picky. Reallllly picky.

We do make them try new things, but it has been an uphill battle until recently. So how does watching TV play into all this? Let me backtrack.

We have a rule during the school year that only educational shows may be watched during school time.

We have an hour-long lunch break, so they can watch something after lunch. I deemed cooking/food shows as educational, and they are fun for the whole family!

Back to the picky eaters – I noticed that the more shows we watched, the more interested they were in trying new food combinations.

My picky eaters still have a limited menu, but they now both like salad and even hunt for the spinach in it. A year ago I would not have believed you if you had told me that they would willingly eat a salad!

Here are some of our favorite shows:

  • Chopped
  • Diners, Drive-ins and Dives
  • Barefoot Contessa
  • The Best Thing I Ever Ate
  • Giada at Home
  • Good Eats
  • 30-Minute Meals

So if you are sitting there thinking, “There is no way my kid will ever eat a salad”, don’t give up hope . . . just turn on the TV!  HaHa

{Be sure to screen any new shows before allowing your child to watch. There are some unsavory ones out there.}

WFMW – RePurposing Old Binders

August 31, 2011 By: amyswandering2 Comments

I hate to throw anything away if it can be re-purposed into something useful!

I recently cleaned out all of our old school stuff and found some binders that were cute, but had tears along the spine.

We decided to cut both of the covers off and use them as writing boards (kind of like a clipboard, but with a pocket instead of a clip).

That left us with the rings on the spine, which is way too useful-looking to throw away. 😉

I think it could be hung on the wall with a 3M command strip. You could hang necklaces on the rings, or any type of cards on an index ring (chore cards, flash cards. etc.).

Re-using cute stuff works for me!

WFMW – Theme Night Menu Plan

July 27, 2011 By: amyswandering1 Comment

The traditional weekly menu plan is not my friend. I’ve tried to make the relationship work, but I just don’t like to be told what I am going to eat and when I am going to eat it.

I need some sort of organization though, or I get in a food rut. Last week was one of those ruts, so I called a family meeting and we brainstormed some meal ideas.

You are all familiar with the Day of the Week menu themes: Mexican Monday, Italian Tuesday, etc. My hubby decided to use that idea to plan a master menu with the results of our brainstorming session.

All I have to do is look at the list and choose a meal for the day that matches the ingredients I have on hand. Organized chaos – that’s how I roll! 😀

Here is the list we made, in case you need some fresh ideas:

~Mexican Monday~

  • Burritos
  • Nachos
  • Quesadillas
  • Tacos
  • Enchiladas
  • Taquitos
  • Fajitas
  • Carne Asada
  • Taco Salad
  • Carnitas
  • Salsa Verde Beef

~Italian Tuesday~

  • Spaghetti
  • Lasagna
  • Baked Ziti
  • Pesto Pasta
  • Skilletini
  • Spinach Alfredo Lasagna
  • Ravioli
  • Tortellini
  • Chicken Parmesan

~Whatever Wednesday~

  • Chicken Pot Pie
  • Meatloaf
  • Fried Pork Chops
  • Chicken Spaghetti
  • Breakfast
  • Sub Sandwiches
  • Fish
  • Beef Stew
  • Fried Chicken
  • Stuffed Bell Peppers

~Grillin’ Thursday~

  • Hamburgers
  • Hot Dogs
  • BBQ Chicken
  • Sausage
  • Pork Chops
  • Steak

~Fun Friday~ (we watch a movie & eat junk food)

  • Pizza
  • Stromboli
  • Calzones
  • Sausage Balls
  • Mozzarella Cheese Sticks
  • Smokies
  • Rotel Cheese Dip w/sausage
  • Corn Dogs
  • Popcorn
  • Fried Pickles
  • Frito Pie

What meals would you add to my list?

June 29, 2011 By: amyswandering3 Comments

I got this idea from Thrifty Decorating and it was a hit!!

I printed the experiments onto cardstock, along with the box rules, and put them on a ring. The cards stay inside a storage baggie when in use. The tools are in a smaller tub, which sits inside of a large a tub that holds all of the experiment ingredients.

Leave me a comment if you would like me to email you my experiment card file.

Box Contents:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • dish soap
  • coffee filters
  • baggies
  • straws
  • string
  • clear plastic punch cups
  • plastic spoons
  • bag of misc junk
  • magnets
  • tongs
  • funnels
  • measuring cup
  • measuring spoons
  • droppers

Box Rules:

  • Put newspaper or plastic tablecloth on the table.
  • Keep instruction cards in the baggie at all times.
  • Read all directions before starting
  • Wash & dry items completely when finished.
  • Put tools in the correct tubs.
  • Do not use items in tubs for anything but experiments.
  • Any arguing will get you banned from the box for 2 days.

Experiments I used:

  • Magnetic Pickups
  • Fizz & Bubble
  • Exploding Lunch Bag
  • Music in the Kitchen
  • Color Climbers
  • Introduce Yourself to a Worm
  • Levitate a Paperclip
  • Paper Noise

WFMW – Swagbucks + Groupon

June 8, 2011 By: amyswanderingcomment

I was poking around the Swagbucks site this morning, trying to find a quick way to earn some Amazon gift cards, when I made an exciting discovery:

You can earn Swagbucks when making a purchase on Groupon or Eversave. And I’m not talking just a couple of Swagbucks – it’s anywhere from 115 to 400!!

~WordPress.com does not approve of me linking to Swagbucks for some reason LOL. You can copy & paste either of these links to get there, or just Google it!

Here’s how to find the deals:

  • Sign up for Swagbucks if you haven’t already (30 points for new sign-ups)
  • Go to Special Offers in the left-hand column
  • Click on Local Deals under the TrialPay tab

~You can get a $3 credit on your first purchase with Eversave and earn $10 credit there and on Groupon when you refer a friend.~

Do you have any tips for using these sites?

{Not familiar with these sites? Swagbucks lets you earn points through their search engine that can be redeemed for prizes and gift cards. Groupon and Eversave offer daily deals from local businesses. I have used all three of these with great success!}

Run on over to We Are That Family for tons of great tips!

(This post contains my referral links for Swagbucks, Groupon and Eversave.)
