CuriosityStream Educational Video Network for Homeschool

October 14, 2015 By: amyswanderingcomment

*Disclosure: I received a free CuriosityStream subscription for review purposes and am being compensated for my time. I am not required to give a positive review.  As always,  I am sharing my honest opinion with you.

CuriosityStream - an educational video network for homeschool

We love watching videos in our homeschool. My kids always act like they are getting away with something when I give permission to watch an educational show. And I’ll be honest, I enjoy the occasional break from being the teacher.

We have streaming subscriptions for Netflix and Amazon Prime, and use them both to watch educational shows… when we can find them! I don’t usually have time to spend an hour or more digging through vague categories in search of an appropriate show for my kids to watch. And there is no way I am going to turn the job over to my kids because there are some categories that little (and big) eyes should not see.

CuriosityStream

When I first learned about CuriosityStream, I was immediately interested in exploring it further. CuriosityStream is the world’s first ad-free, on-demand streaming service for quality educational programs that both inspire and entertain. They are available whenever and wherever you want to watch on any internet-connected device. [Read more…]

Resources for the FUN Homeschool Mom

Resources for the FUN Homeschool Mom

I love to mix up our school days around the holidays and add in what I call Funschool. We are very big on traditions in our family and try to live life in rhythm with the seasons. It helps us appreciate God’s blessings and acknowledge the beauty of His creation.

With 5 kids, my days are very busy. Our Funschool activities need to mesh with our daily studies in order to not get behind. I use a variety of methods to blend the fun with the everyday:

  • themed Funschool unit studies
  • grammar practice using mad libs
  • seasonal poetry assignments
  • holiday research projects
  • monthly writing prompt calendars
  • themed copywork
  • holiday coloring pages during read alouds
  • crafts that are also home decor

The key to balancing all of this is to have a way to organize ideas. I created Pinterest boards for each season and holiday. I pin things all throughout the year that we might enjoy. My very specific boards make it easy to browse through each month and choose what we’re going to do. Once I’ve decided, I assigned our activities to weeks using my Monthly Creative Planner. It is one of my subscriber freebies, but you can download the October planner page by clicking on the pic below.

October Creative Planner

I have a list of websites that are my go-to places for seasonal printables and ideas. These are some of my favorites:

  • Activity Village – tons of creative printables
  • Mathwire – seasonal math games & activities
  • Make Learning Fun – themed printable activities
  • Red Ted Art – art & craft projects for every season
  • Sunday School Kids – Christian crafts and activities for the holidays
  • Education.com – holiday worksheets & coloring pages (5 free a month)
  • Teaching Heart – ideas for themed units
  • A to Z Teacher Stuff – thematic units & lesson plans
  • Education World – holiday lesson ideas
  • Homeschool Share – unit studies & lapbooks

I also like to incorporate games, puzzles, and music into some of our Funschool days. We own all of these listed below. Some are out of production & ridiculously priced, but I am linking to them anyway because I’ve discovered they sometimes bring them back! You can also keep an eye out for them a thrift stores.

Autumn Romance Puzzle
Great Pumpkin Game

Wee Sing Halloween

Charlie Brown Christmas Game

And lest you think I’m some kind of crafty, organized, type-A mom, let me be transparent with you.

  • I enjoy crafts but the mess & chaos make me feel like I need to breathe into a paper bag.
  • We actually get around to doing about half of what I plan, and sometimes it’s because we are missing that one crucial supply and I don’t want to go to the store AGAIN.
  • Our Funschool started in the early days of our homeschool because I am easily bored and couldn’t stand the thought of doing the same thing every.single.day.
  • We’ve had days where our Funschooling totally wiped out this non-multitasking mama and we never got around to the school books. And you know what? That’s okay! We’re making wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.

Now it’s your turn. Do you have some FUN advice for homeschoolers? Do you need help in that area? Leave a comment!

A Christian Magazine for Kids

October 10, 2015 By: amyswanderingcomment

I was sponsored by World News Group to review their magazines and am excited to share my experience as well as an awesome giveaway!  All opinions are mine alone.  For more information please read my full disclosure.

World News Magazines for Kids

I intentionally shelter my kids from the news. Newspapers are too biased, the evening news on TV is too negative, and you never know what kind of garbage is going to be promoted in the sidebar of a news website. My husband and I share what we deem to be appropriate, depending on the ages of the children involved in the discussion. I was a bit relieved to find out that there are Christian news magazines for kids!

World News Group

The World News Group publishes three news magazines:

  • God’s Big WORLD for the little ones
  • WORLDkids for 7-10 year olds
  • WORLDteen for the older kids

These magazines are a breath of fresh air! They cover current events, world cultures, science explorations, historical events and more. The articles are written from a Biblical worldview, and scriptures are scattered throughout the pages.

God's Big World Puzzles

The magazines contain puzzles, worksheets, and quizzes. I printed ours from the digital copies that come with each subscription.

World News Worksheets

Each World News subscription also includes access to additional resources on the websites. Depending on which age you purchase, there are interactive stories, games, and videos that accompany the articles. Weekly emails are sent out that highlight the updates.

World News Kids Explore

WORLDteen is particularly valuable to me. My teenagers hang out on Facebook. They see the headlines, and know there is some heavy stuff going on in our world right now. I love how World News discusses current events while reminding them that God is in control.
