How Do I Teach Nature Study? Day 3: Nature Notebooks

August 21, 2013 By: amyswandering2 Comments

nature study

Everyone has different ideas about notebooking. Some stick strictly to traditional notebooking pages. My definition? If it fits in a notebook, it is a notebooking page!

Every week we do something for Nature Fun Friday. We try to add a page to our nature notebooks each week. The kids might sketch something they saw on a nature walk, color a detailed page, or complete an activity sheet. On rainy days we do a nature craft, or read from a nature story ebook.

Nature notebook pages are not limited to only the animals in your area. Pick a chapter from the Handbook of Nature Study and learn about whatever you want! Choose coordinating activity pages and you can open up a whole new world for your child.

I have been working hard to create a Nature Notebook Master List to provide you with pages of FREE resources for your nature study! I will be continually adding new activities, so be sure to Pin or bookmark!

How Do I Teach Nature Study? Day 2: Stop, Look, and Listen

nature study

I used to think that those of us who lived in the suburbs could never have as rich a nature study as those who were surrounded by miles of undeveloped land. (And just forget about it if you lived in the city!) Then something happened that changed my mind. I was on the TOS Crew review team and one of the books I received was Over Our Heads in Wonder. It is a simple little science book that points to God’s majesty through His creation. During one of the lessons, we went outside and watched the sky. An amazing thing happened. We started hearing the different birds perched in the trees. We noticed some little beetles running through the grass. We watch the circus performance of the zany squirrels. All because we were STILL and QUIET.

How often do we miss the beauty of God because we don’t slow down long enough to see it?

We decided to try it out the next time we went to our neighborhood park. We discovered intricate spiderwebs on the railings, beautiful bird feathers on the ground, and a turtle soaking up the sun. We collected interesting rocks. Warrior Boy picked a few pine needles to make tea, because he had seen it done on one of the survival shows.

turtle

Myrtle the Turtle – the mailman gave her to us after finding her in the street. We kept her until winter and released her at the city park. She was so happy!

And the wonderful thing about nature? It is always changing. Each time we venture out, there is something new to discover and explore.

Try a few of these ideas with your kiddos:

make a backyard field guide

discover life inside a pinecone

cloud identification guide

play backyard bingo

go on a dice walk

shake a tree and see what falls out

observe a tree through all four seasons

hunt for squirrels with Project Squirrel

become a bird sleuth with Project FeederWatch

watch for migrating Monarchs

Have some fun with the things you find:

20 ways to get arty outdoors

singing cicada craft

make nature paintbrushes

learn how to whistle an acorn cap

deconstruct a flower

paint with dandelions

Create a little nature corner in your house to display all or your treasures. Your kids will continue to enjoy them, and it adds a natural beauty to your home. We like to record some of our discoveries through notebooking. Stay tuned for more ideas!!

~*~ Will YOU share your wonderful ideas with us, pretty please? ~*~

How Do I Teach Nature Study Without Moving to the Country?

August 19, 2013 By: amyswandering1 Comment

I am joining up with some of your favorite homeschool bloggers this week to bring you the How Do I Teach…? series. I am so excited and know you are just going to love all of the helpful topics!

My struggle with nature study started with a case of blog envy. I would scroll through pictures of kids frollicking in the woods and wading through streams, and read about all of the delightful creatures they discovered along the way. Then I would look out my suburban window and sigh at the blandness of it all.

A wonderful thing happened though, when we decided to get outside and make the best of it. We discovered that God’s amazing creation is everywhere. Sometimes you just have to look a little bit harder!

August 13, 2013 By: amyswandering4 Comments

RLH

It is the last week of summer break for us, and that means Mommy is in planning mode!

I will spend the week pouring over our curriculum choices and mapping out our year. The kids know that their lazy bone days are coming to an end, so they will spend every waking moment watching TV and playing video games.

Real Life Homeschooling is about turning the world into our classroom, right? So to make myself feel better about my kids’ melting brains, I decided to call it TV Summer School.

Subjects:

Science   Myth Busters

History   Barrett-Jackson Auctions

Geography   House Hunters International

Culinary Arts   Chopped

Economics   Love It or List It

Arts & Crafts   Flea Market Flip

Nature Study   Duck Dynasty

Social Studies   Teen Beach Movie

Creative Writing   Merlin

Character Study   Sponge Bob

What show does your family enjoy together?

{Note: This post is intended as a tongue-in-cheek bit of fun. While I do think there is educational value in our daily activities, I don’t use these shows for actual school credit.}
